44 dry coolers for precision cooling of two large data centres

44 dry coolers - with a total capacity of 75 MW - to cool two large data centres in Paris and Madrid. A challenge requiring a well thought out proposal.

Type of application

Data centre cooling

Customer requirement

The very restrictive conditions imposed underlined the need for a customised and highly specialised approach to meet the specific requirements of the project:

  • A performance tolerance of only ± 3% kW of capacity to ensure optimal operation of the coolers in a critical environment such as a data centre.
  • A noise level tolerance of ± 1 dB(A).
  • The limited space available on the data centre roof, in relation to the demanded capacity, requires a compact and highly efficient design to maximise the use of the available space.
  • The need to size machines for handling and transport adds a further level of complexity, requiring special attention to the mechanical-structural design to ensure safety and integrity during transport and installation.

Technical expertise, ingenuity and the ability to develop an effective and reliable solution that fully meets the customer’s needs are needed to successfully overcome these constraints.

Why the customer chose to work with Stefani

The customer chose us because of our technical expertise, flexibility and extensive experience developed over the years in the field of applied heat exchange.

Our solution

We started the manufacturing process of the dry coolers based on the design of our very reliable OSTRO cooler, a unit that is highly appreciated by our customers.

In order to guarantee the quality and efficiency of our dry cooler, we first built a module of the unit and then the complete machine and carried out a two-stage performance test: the first with the single module and the second with the complete machine.

Both tests passed with flying colours, demonstrating the accuracy of our calculations – thermodynamic and aeraulic – which were essential to meet the performance targets.

At the same time, the customer had the opportunity to formally appreciate and approve the performance and robustness of the machine.

In order to achieve these objectives, an in-depth knowledge of applied heat exchange and good co-ordination with suppliers and between all departments of the company were essential to achieve the overall thermodynamic and structural project objectives.

The contract

The delivered product is an OSTRO with exceptional performance and dimensions: 1.70 MW of capacity for a 13 metre long unit, more than three metres high, with 22 Ø 910 fans and a total weight of 8 tonnes.

Despite the large capacity, we have managed to keep the dimensions small so that the machine can be transported on a standard low-bed trailer. This OSTRO features a large heat exchange surface area relative to its size.

Advantage achieved

The customer praised our solution, which fully met his requirements. This is evidenced by the fact that after the first instalment of the contract, further orders were confirmed and completed for a total of 44 units.

Transparency, integrity and our commitment to delivering the best result have been the cornerstones of our working relationship and the customer has recognised the value of this solid and reliable partnership. The decision to choose us was therefore the result of a combination of technical expertise, consolidated experience and a total commitment to excellence in service and end result.
